The first movements of day 2 of our trip to Meiringen 2019. This video was shot on Tuesday 30th April and these jets departed at 0830 under the callsign HERON41. These little Tigers don’t half make a racket in burner when you’re up close 🙂
This was the 16:00 departure on the 29th April 2019, under the call sign RAPTOR61 flt. The jets recovered back to Meiringen at 16:50. The launch was shot from my favourite location at Meiringen. They were flying the tail off the Staffel 11 (Tigers) special tail F-18C during this week so we shot a lot of this jet!
Interesting to see the nose leg extend on this F-5E before take off. Also great to see the brakes come off at 00:31 too 🙂
One from the archives from RIAT 2012 that I recently re-found. This NATO E-3 pilot demonstrated some truly amazing flying skills. A fighter style initial and break to land followed by an early base leg turn and a dramatic landing. The jet must be at 60Ëš of bank on the initial turn and pulling so hard that vapour was forming on the top of the wings. Definitely a landing to remember!

The second wave of launches of the day from Monday 29th April 2019. Three F-18s – a D model the Staffel 11 (Tigers) special tail F-18C and another C model in a pretty energetic departure.
This isn’t normally a part of the runway you can get to but the people we were staying with allowed us to get down here to shoot the jets. The runway is perhaps 40-50ft away, pretty dramatic when F-18s are tearing towards you in full burner!
This was the second wave of jets from Monday 29th April. The F-5s launched at 13:30 and returned at around 14:30. The F-18 didn’t depart from Meiringen on this day so maybe departed from Payerne before joining up with the F-5s for some training.
It’s interesting to see how much more runway the F-5F took to get off compared with the E.

The noise in the valley when these guys go into burner is special. Ground-shakingly awesome and just seems to go deeper and deeper until is almost feels like the air is being sucked out of your lungs. Can’t beat it! 🙂
We paid a visit to Meiringen air base back in the spring of 2019. Our favouriate air base to visit and we were lucky enough to catch both F-18s and F-5s during this trip. It was especially great to catch the F-5Fs which I’ll upload in the coming days.
